Why you need to stop charging your phone overnight

Waking up to a fully charged phone may seem like a great way to start the day, but leaving your device plugged in overnight is a bad idea. When a phone has reached 100% charge, it will continue to get trickle charges to keep it topped up at 100 percent. These extra charges keep the battery working non-stop12.

Heat is the culprit when it comes to battery degradation. Although you can’t prevent the normal wear and tear from charging and discharging, you can mitigate the impact of heat. When your iPhone is connected to a charger, it warms up—more than if it isn’t connected. Even though this increase might be only a few degrees above room temperature, doing this overnight consistently doesn’t seem wise.

Here’s how I’ve changed my charging habits for my iPhone:

  1. Morning Boost: After waking up, I give my iPhone a 30 to 45-minute charge (and also charge my Apple Watch simultaneously).
  2. Mid-Afternoon Top-Up: Around mid-afternoon, I charge it for another 30 minutes or so to bring it to the 80% mark, which usually lasts until the next morning.
  3. Car Charger or Power Bank: If I’m out and about, I use a car charger or carry a power bank.

This approach puts less stress on the iPhone’s battery and charger, ensuring a healthier battery life over time3. So, let’s bid farewell to overnight charging and embrace smarter charging practices! 📱⚡
